From fighting COVID-19 to bringing healthcare to the world's poorest communities — open source is literally saving millions of lives. This is its story.
In 1955, Dr. Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine — a disease that paralyzed and killed thousands of children every year. When asked "Who owns the patent?", he gave the most open-source answer in history:
He refused to patent his vaccine, giving it freely to the world. This saved an estimated 1.8 مليار شخص and prevented 650,000 deaths.
This is the same spirit that drives every open-source medical project today — the belief that tools to save lives should never be locked behind paywalls.
These tools are used in hospitals, clinics, and research labs around the world.
بدأه متطوعون من Regenstrief Institute وPartners in Health عام 2004، وصُمّم لهدف واحد: give every patient in the world a medical record، حتى في الأماكن التي لا يتوفر فيها إنترنت أو كهرباء.
In many developing countries, patient records were written on paper — or didn't exist at all. Patients would show up at a clinic and nobody knew their history, allergies, or medications. OpenMRS changed that forever.
Countries using it: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Mozambique, Haiti, India, Philippines, and dozens more. It runs on old laptops, works offline, and syncs when internet is available.
Visit openmrs.org →GNU Health is a complete Hospital Information System, Health Information System, and Electronic Medical Records system — all in one, all free. Created by Dr. Luis Falcón, it manages everything from patient appointments to lab results to epidemiology tracking.
It's used by entire national health systems! Jamaica uses GNU Health as its national health system. United Nations for its impact on public health.
During the COVID-19 crisis, hospitals ran out of ventilators — machines that breathe for patients who can't breathe on their own. Commercial ventilators cost $25,000–$50,000 لكل واحد and couldn't be manufactured fast enough.
The open-source community responded instantly. Projects like OpenVent, Medtronic PB560 (أتاحت Medtronic تصميمها كمصدر مفتوح!)، و MIT E-Vent shared ventilator designs freely. Makers and engineers around the world started building them.
When Medtronic open-sourced their ventilator design, they said: "In a pandemic, saving lives matters more than profits." This is the Salk spirit in action — and it's the core of what open source is about.
Traditional drug discovery is controlled by pharmaceutical companies that spend $2.6 مليار on average to develop a single new drug — then charge enormous prices to recoup costs. Many diseases that affect poor countries (malaria, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases) get almost no research because there's "no profit."
Free AI tools can now detect diseases from X-rays, predict heart attacks, analyze pathology slides, and screen for cancer — often more accurately than human doctors.
Projects like MONAI (Medical Open Network for AI)، OpenMined (ذكاء اصطناعي يحافظ على خصوصية البيانات الصحية)، ومئات النماذج على Hugging Face are making medical AI accessible to hospitals everywhere — not just wealthy ones.
The pandemic showed the world why open collaboration saves lives.
When COVID-19 hit, closed systems failed. Open systems saved us.
Chinese scientists sequenced COVID-19's genome and shared it publicly within 24 hours on January 11, 2020. This open data allowed scientists worldwide to immediately start working on vaccines. Without this open sharing, vaccines would have taken years longer.
The famous COVID tracking dashboard by Johns Hopkins University was built using open-source tools and open data. It became the world's most visited website during the pandemic — 4.5 billion views! The code is on GitHub for anyone to use.
The GISAID platform enabled scientists to share COVID openly. This allowed tracking of variants (Delta, Omicron), understanding mutations, and developing targeted vaccines. Open data saved months of research time.
When ventilators ran out, the open-source community designed and built emergency ventilators for $500 بدلًا من $50,000.
The Folding@home project used millions of personal computers worldwide to simulate protein folding — helping understand how the virus works. At its peak, it was more powerful than the world's top 500 supercomputers combined!
If COVID-19 had happened 20 years earlier — without open-source tools, open data sharing, and global collaboration — millions more people would have died.
Saves 1.8 billion lives. The original "open source" medical act.
Free electronic medical records for developing countries. Now in 5,000+ facilities worldwide.
Complete hospital management system. Later adopted as Jamaica's national health system.
Scientists worldwide collaborate openly to find malaria cures. All data published free.

Every time you learn about open source, contribute to a project, or share knowledge — you're joining a chain of people that goes all the way back to Jonas Salk refusing to patent the polio vaccine. You don't need to be a doctor to save lives. You can write code. You can translate. You can teach. You can share.
Every open-source medical tool, every shared dataset, every free diagnosis model — is an act of saving lives. This is the highest calling of technology.
