🎯 Session Goal

By the end of this 1-hour session, students will understand what open data is, why it matters, and will have completed a hands-on activity using real open data — either mapping their school neighborhood on OpenStreetMap or creating a chart from real World Bank data.

🍰 Explain it like a recipe!

Closed data is like a restaurant that serves amazing cake but keeps the recipe secret. You can eat it, but you can't make it yourself or share it.

البيانات المفتوحة is like a baker who posts the recipe online for free. Anyone can read it, bake the cake, change the recipe (add chocolate!), and share it with friends. The recipe is free for everyone, forever.

🌤️
Weather

Every weather app uses open weather data. The measurements come from government weather stations — free for all!

🚌
Bus Schedules

Google Maps knows your bus times because cities publish schedules as open data. Any app can use it!

🌍 One Powerful Story: Mapping Haiti

🆘 Real Story (Tell This!)

In 2010, a huge earthquake hit Haiti. Rescue teams arrived but had NO detailed maps of the streets! Google and Apple hadn't mapped it — it wasn't "profitable." So thousands of volunteers worldwide opened OpenStreetMap, traced buildings and roads from satellite photos, and created the best map of Haiti in 48 hours. That's the power of open data.

A
⏱️ 20 minutes · Needs: browser + OSM account

Goal: Each student adds at least ONE real thing to OpenStreetMap — a shop, a park bench, a footpath, a school building, or any feature near your school that is missing from the map.

  1. افتح openstreetmap.org in your browser
  3. Search for your school's name or address
  4. Zoom in close — can you see your school building? The playground? The nearby shops?
  6. Complete the built-in tutorial
  8. Click to add a point or trace a building — fill in the name and type
  9. Click «حفظ» → write "Added [thing] near [school name]" → Done!
  10. 🎉 You just improved the world's free map! Your edit helps everyone.
💡 Teacher Tip

Before the session, check OSM for your school area and note 5–10 things that are missing (shops, paths, buildings). Write them on the board as "mapping challenges" for students. This gives direction and makes it a fun hunt!

✓
I found my school on OpenStreetMap
✓
I completed the editor tutorial
✓
I found something MISSING from the map
✓
I added it and clicked SAVE!
✓
I can explain what I added and why it helps

B
Turn Real Numbers Into a Visual Story!
⏱️ 20 minutes · Needs: browser + LibreOffice Calc (or Google Sheets)

Goal: Each student picks a country, downloads real data from the World Bank, and creates a bar chart or line chart comparing something interesting.

  1. افتح data.worldbank.org in your browser
  2. In the search bar, type something interesting: «
  3. Click on a result (e.g., "School enrollment, primary (% gross)")
  4. اختر 3–5 دول you're curious about (your country + 2–4 others)
  5. Click «تنزيل» → CSV (سيمنحك هذا ملف جدول بيانات)
  7. Select the data → click «
  8. Choose Bar Chart or Line Chart — add a title!
  9. انظر إلى مخططك — ما story does it tell? Which country is highest? Lowest? Why?
  10. 🎉 You just did REAL data analysis with REAL world data!

Easy (ages 9–11): Internet users (% of population) — compare 5 countries over 10 years. The chart is dramatic and easy to discuss!

💡 Discussion Questions

• What surprised you about the data?
• Why do you think some countries score higher than others?
• Could this data help a government make better decisions?
• What other data would you want to see?

✓
I found data on the World Bank website
✓
I downloaded it or copied the numbers
✓
I created a chart in LibreOffice Calc
✓
I can explain what my chart shows
✓
I have a title on my chart

Answer all 5 questions. You need 3/5 to pass!

5. Can YOU add information to OpenStreetMap?

✍️ Reflection (Write 2 Sentences)

Students can write this on paper or type it. Collect reflections to understand what resonated and what needs follow-up.

🏠 Take Home & Next Steps

🎯 Homework Challenge (Optional)

5 more things in your neighborhood on OpenStreetMap this week. Take a walk, notice shops, paths, benches, and trees — then add them to the map when you get home. Bring a screenshot of your edits to the next session!
