When COVID-19 hit, countries that had strong open data systems responded faster. South Korea published real-time open data on infection clusters, mask availability, and hospital capacity. Citizens built apps overnight using this data — showing the nearest pharmacy with masks in stock. تايوان did the same. Countries WITHOUT open data (like many in the Middle East and Africa) struggled because nobody had access to the information needed to make decisions.

When a devastating 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, commercial maps of Port-au-Prince were almost empty — major companies had never mapped this "unprofitable" area in detail. In 2010, a Nicaraguan military commander used Google Maps to justify invading a small strip of land belonging to Costa Rica. Google Maps had drawn the border incorrectly! This could never happen with OSM in the same way — the data is open, verifiable, and correctable by the community. One company's error should not define borders.

Her maps were later used by the local disaster response agency to plan earthquake evacuation routes for children. She proved that even a child can make a life-saving contribution to open data.
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) organizes mapathons — events where volunteers map areas that need help. Earthquakes, floods, epidemics, refugee camps — when disaster strikes, mappers respond.

Even with "anonymized" data, combining multiple datasets can sometimes identify individuals. In 2006, نشرت Netflix تقييمات أفلام «مجهّلة الهوية» as open data for a competition.
