Õppetund 1: mis on arvuti?
Duration: 1.5 hours · Learn the basics of what makes a computer tick!

A computer is an electronic machine that can store, process, and display information. Computers help us do amazing things — from writing stories to exploring outer space! But how do they work? Let's find out!

The first computer, called ENIAC, was built in 1945. It weighed more than 27 tons — that's heavier than five elephants! Today, a smartphone in your pocket is millions of times more powerful.

🖥️ Arvutite tüübid

Computers come in many shapes and sizes. Each type is designed for different tasks:

🖥️

⚙️ Hardware vs. Software

Every computer is made up of two important things:

Hardware = the physical parts you can touch (screen, keyboard, mouse, cables).
Software = programmid ja juhised, mis ütlevad riistvarale, mida teha (rakendused, mängud ja operatsioonisüsteem).

Think of it this way: Hardware is like your body, and software is like your brain telling your body what to do!

🔌 Arvuti põhiosad

Click each part below to learn what it does:

🧠
CPU (Processor)
The "brain" of the computer. It does all the thinking and calculations. The faster the CPU, the quicker your computer works. Measured in GHz (gigahertz).

Õppetund 2: operatsioonisüsteemi alused
Duration: 1.5 hours · Explore the desktop and make it yours!

🤔 Mis on operatsioonisüsteem?

Üks Operatsioonisüsteem (OS) is the most important software on your computer. It manages everything — the screen, the keyboard, your files, and all the programs you use. Without an OS, your computer would be like a car without a driver!

The OS is the "boss" that controls all the hardware and software. It lets you open apps, save files, connect to the internet, and much more.

Õppetund 3: failid ja kaustad
Duration: 2 hours · Organize your digital world like a pro!

📄 Mis on fail?

A file is any piece of information saved on your computer. Just like a physical document in a filing cabinet, a digital file has a name and contains content. Every photo you take, every document you type, and every song you listen to is a file!

📁 Mis on kaust?

A folder (nimetatakse ka directory) on nagu mahuti, mis hoiab faile. Korra hoidmiseks saad panna kaustu teiste kaustade sisse — täpselt nagu karpe suuremate karpide sisse!

Think of it this way:
🏫 School = Your Computer
📂 Klassiruum = kaust
📄 Tööleht = fail
📂 Klassiruum → 📂 matemaatika kaust → 📄 homework.odt = kaustad kaustade sees!

📝 Failinimed ja -laiendid

Every file has two parts in its name: the name and the extension. Laiend ütleb arvutile, mis tüüpi fail see on.

ExtensionTypeAvatakse rakendusegaExample

.mp3🎵 Audio / MusicMuusikapleiersong.mp3
.mp4🎬 VideoVideo Playermovie.mp4
.txt📃 LihttekstText Editornotes.txt
.zip📦 Tihendatud arhiivArchive Managerbackup.zip
💡 Tip: Open Documenti vormingud (.odt, .ods, .odp) on open standards — they can be opened by any program, not just one company's software. That's the open-source way!

🛠️ Failitoimingud: põhioskused

📄 Uue faili või kausta loomine ▼

Create a new folder: Ava failihaldur → paremklõpsa tühjal alal → vali „New Folder” → sisesta nimi → vajuta Enter.

Create a new file: Ava rakendus (näiteks LibreOffice Writer) → kirjuta sisu → vali File → Save As → vali asukoht → pane failile nimi → klõpsa Save.

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N creates a new folder in most file managers!

✏️ Renaming Files and Folders ▼

Meetod 1: Right-click the file → choose "Rename" → type the new name → press Enter.

Meetod 2: Click the file once to select it → press F2 → type the new name → press Enter.

Important rules: Don't use special characters like / \ : * ? " < > | in file names. Don't change the file extension unless you know what you're doing!

📋 Kopeerimine, lõikamine ja kleepimine ▼

Copy (Ctrl + C): teeb koopia. Algne fail jääb paigale.

Cut (Ctrl + X): teisaldab faili. Algne fail eemaldatakse vanast asukohast.

Kleebi (Ctrl + V): asetab kopeeritud või lõigatud faili uude asukohta.

Think of it like this: Copy = photocopy a page (original stays). Cut = pick up the page and move it somewhere else.

🗑️ Kustutamine ja prügikast ▼

Delete: Select the file → press the Delete key. The file goes to the Trash (pole igaveseks kadunud!).

Restore: Ava prügikast → paremklõpsa failil → vali selle taastamiseks „Restore”.

Püsiv kustutamine: Empty the Trash to remove files forever. Be careful — you can't undo this!

Shortcut: Shift + Delete permanently deletes without using the Trash (use with caution!).

🔍 Failide otsimine ▼

Can't find a file? Use the Search feature:

In File Manager: Click the search icon (🔍) or press Ctrl + F, then type part of the file name.

From Desktop: Press the Super key and start typing — Linux will search for files and apps!

Tip: Give your files clear, descriptive names so they're easy to find later. "math_homework_chapter3.odt" is much better than "document1.odt"!

🎮 Activity: Treasure Hunt — Organize the Messy Folder!

Your teacher will give you a folder full of messy, disorganized files. Your mission:

  1. Create folders named: "Documents", "Images", "Music", "Videos", "Other"
  2. Teisalda iga fail laiendi järgi õigesse kausta
  3. Rename any files that have confusing names (like "asdfgh.jpg" → "sunset_photo.jpg")
  4. Delete any duplicate files you find
  5. Take a screenshot of your organized folder to show your teacher!
The average person has over 2,000 files on their computer. Good organization saves you about 30 minutes per week searching for lost files — that's over 26 hours per year!
✏️
Quick Check: Lesson 3
Show what you know about files and folders!
1What does a file extension tell us?
AWho created the file
BWhat type of file it is
CHow old the file is
DThe file's password
2What is the keyboard shortcut for PASTE?
ACtrl + C
BCtrl + X
CCtrl + V
DCtrl + Z
3Which extension is an open-source document format?
A.odt
B.exe
C.mp3
D.jpg
4When you delete a file, where does it go first?
AIt's gone forever
BThe internet
CThe Downloads folder
DThe Trash
5What's the difference between Copy and Cut?
AThere is no difference
BCopy keeps the original; Cut moves it
CCopy deletes the file; Cut saves it
DCut is faster than Copy

Õppetund 4: salvestusruum ja mälu
Duration: 1.5 hours · Understand where your data lives!

🧠 RAM või salvestusruum: mis vahe neil on?

Inimesed ajavad sageli segi memory (RAM) ja storage, kuid neil on väga erinevad ülesanded:

🧠 RAM (mälu) = Your desk at school. It holds what you're working on RIGHT NOW. When you close your notebook (turn off the computer), the desk is cleared.

💾 Salvestusruum = Your backpack or locker. It holds all your stuff permanently — books, notebooks, lunch — even when you're not using them.
Feature🧠 RAM (mälu)💾 Salvestusruum (kõvaketas / SSD)
PurposeHolds data being used right nowSaves data permanently
SpeedVery fast ⚡Slower (HDD) or Fast (SSD)
When power is offData is LOST ❌Data is KEPT ✅
Typical size4 GB – 16 GB128 GB – 2 TB
VõrdlusDesk at schoolBackpack / locker

📏 Andmemahtude mõistmine

Data is measured in bytes. Suurused on väikseimast suurimani järgmised:

UnitSizeWhat It Can Hold
1 bait (B)1 märkÜks täht, näiteks „A”
1 kilobait (KB)1,000 baitiLühike tekstsõnum
1 megabait (MB)1,000 KBÜks kvaliteetne foto või üks laul
1 gigabait (GB)1,000 MBUmbes 250 laulu või 1 film
1 terabait (TB)1,000 GBUmbes 500 tundi videot!
If you printed all the data in 1 Terabyte as text on paper, the stack would be about 16 km (10 miles) tall — higher than most airplanes fly!

💿 Salvestusruumi tüübid

🖴
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
The traditional storage. Uses spinning magnetic disks. Cheaper but slower, and can break if dropped. Good for storing lots of data at low cost. You can sometimes hear it spinning!

💿
CD / DVD (Legacy)
Optilised kettad, mis salvestavad andmeid laseriga. CD mahutab umbes 700 MB, DVD 4.7 GB. USB-mäluseadmed ja pilvesalvestus on need suuresti asendanud, kuid neid kasutatakse endiselt mõne tarkvara ja filmi jaoks.
Tap to learn more

☁️ What is Cloud Storage?

Cloud storage means your files are saved on powerful computers (servers) on the internet instead of just on your own device. This has big advantages:

✅ Advantages⚠️ Disadvantages
Juurdepääs failidele kõikjaltVajab internetiühendust
Files are backed up automaticallyPrivacy concerns — who can see your data?
Share files easily with othersFree plans have limited space
Pole USB-mälupulga kaotamise riskiKuutasud suurema salvestusruumi eest
🐧 Open-Source Cloud: Nextcloud on tasuta avatud lähtekoodiga pilvesalvestuslahendus.

  1. Save and close any files you have open from the USB drive
  2. Find the USB icon in the file manager sidebar
  3. Click the "Eject" button (⏏️) next to the drive name
  4. Wait for the notification saying "Safe to remove"
  5. Nüüd võid USB-mälupulga ohutult eemaldada

The Software Center is like an app store for Linux. All apps are reviewed for safety.

  1. Ava „Software Center” (või „Ubuntu Software” või „GNOME Software”)
  2. Use the search bar to find the app you want (e.g., "GIMP")
  3. Click on the app to read its description and reviews
  4. Click "Install" — you may need to enter your password
  5. Wait for the download and installation to finish
  6. Find your new app in the Application Menu and enjoy!
💻 Meetod 2: terminalikäsk (kesktase) ▼

The Terminal is a text-based way to control your computer. It's powerful and fast!

To install software, type: sudo apt install program-name

For example, to install GIMP: sudo apt install gimp

„sudo“ tähendab, et küsid administraatori õigusi. „apt“ on paketihaldur, mis laadib tarkvara alla ja paigaldab selle turvaliselt.

📦 Meetod 3: Flatpaki / Snapi paketid ▼

Flatpak ja Snap are modern ways to install apps that work on any Linux distribution. They keep apps sandboxed (isolated) for extra security.

Paljud rakendused on saadaval Flathub.org — a website where you can browse and install Flatpak apps.

🗑️ Tarkvara eemaldamine

To remove software you no longer need:

  1. Ava tarkvarakeskus
  2. Go to the "Installed" tab to see all your apps
  3. Find the app you want to remove
  4. Click "Remove" or "Uninstall" and confirm
⚠️ Safety Rules for Installing Software:
• Only install from trusted sources (Software Center, official websites)
