Governments, scientists, and millions of volunteers are making data FREE for everyone — maps, weather, health, education, transport, economics. This data is changing the world. And YOU can use it, explore it, and contribute to it!
Nagu avatud lähtekoodiga tarkvara, kuid teabe enda jaoks.
Avaandmed is data that is freely available to everyone — to download, use, analyze, remix, and share — without restrictions. Just like open-source software gives you the code, open data gives you the raw information.
Before open data, if you wanted to know your city's air quality, crime rates, bus schedules, or government spending — you had to either pay for it or trust whatever someone told you. Now, governments and organizations publish this data for FREE, and anyone can verify it.
When COVID-19 hit, countries that had strong open data systems responded faster. Lõuna-Korea published real-time open data on infection clusters, mask availability, and hospital capacity. Citizens built apps overnight using this data — showing the nearest pharmacy with masks in stock. Taiwan did the same. Countries WITHOUT open data (like many in the Middle East and Africa) struggled because nobody had access to the information needed to make decisions.

10 miljonit vabatahtlikku loovad kogu maailma kõige üksikasjalikumat tasuta kaarti.
OpenStreetMap is a free, editable map of the entire world, built by over 10 miljonit vabatahtlikku. Mõtle sellest kui kaartide Wikipediast. Igaüks saab panustada — lisada tee, märkida poe, kaardistada pargi või joonistada satelliidipildilt hoone.
Google Maps is owned by Google. Apple Maps by Apple. They decide what to show, what to hide, and can change or charge for access at any time. OpenStreetMap is owned by nobody and everybody. Andmed on Open Database License’i alusel igavesti tasuta.
When a devastating 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, commercial maps of Port-au-Prince were almost empty — major companies had never mapped this "unprofitable" area in detail. Within 48 hours, jälgisid tuhanded OSM-i vabatahtlikud kogu maailmas satelliidipilte ning lõid most detailed map of Haiti ever made. Abiorganisatsioonid kasutasid OSM-i kaarte ellujäänute leidmiseks, varustuse kohaletoimetamiseks ja päästetööde koordineerimiseks. Sellest sai eeskuju Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) — now the leading crisis mapping organization in the world.
In 2024, volunteers used the HOT Tasking Manager to map over 1 million buildings in rural Tanzania in just 30 days. These buildings had NEVER appeared on any map before. Now health workers can find villages, emergency responders can plan routes, and governments can plan infrastructure. All from volunteers tracing satellite images on their laptops at home.
Kuulub Google'ile. Andmed on lukus. Puudulik paljudes arenguriikides.
Kuulub kõigile. Andmed on tasuta allalaaditavad. Kasuta neid tasuta mis tahes rakenduses. SINA otsustad, mida lisada. Vabatahtlikud parandavad täpsust. Sageli on arenguriikides ROHKEM üksikasju, sest kohalikud kaardistavad oma kodukanti.
In 2010, a Nicaraguan military commander used Google Maps to justify invading a small strip of land belonging to Costa Rica. Google Maps had drawn the border incorrectly! This could never happen with OSM in the same way — the data is open, verifiable, and correctable by the community. One company's error should not define borders.
You can start contributing to OpenStreetMap right now — from your browser, no installation needed!
Install JOSM (Java OpenStreetMap Editor) — võimas avatud lähtekoodiga töölauaredaktor tõsistele kaardistajatele. Või kasuta StreetComplete on Android — a game-like app that asks you simple questions about places near you (Is this shop still open? What are the opening hours? Is there a bench here?).
In 2019, a 12-year-old student in Surabaya, Indonesia mapped every school and mosque in her neighborhood using OpenStreetMap after learning about it at school. Her maps were later used by the local disaster response agency to plan earthquake evacuation routes for children. She proved that even a child can make a life-saving contribution to open data.
The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) organizes mapathons — events where volunteers map areas that need help. Earthquakes, floods, epidemics, refugee camps — when disaster strikes, mappers respond.
Since 2010, HOT volunteers have mapped over 150 miljonit hoonet ja 2 miljonit kilomeetrit teid in disaster-affected areas. After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, over 8,000 mappers from 82 countries contributed within the first 48 hours. Their maps were used by the US Marines, the Nepal Army, and dozens of NGOs to coordinate rescue.

14-aastane Texase noor laadis alla air quality data from the EPA's open data portal and asthma hospitalization data from her state's health department. She cross-referenced them and proved that neighborhoods near highways had 3x kõrgem astma esinemissagedus.
Raw data is just numbers. Visualization makes it understandable — and powerful.
10,000 rea temperatuuriandmetega arvutustabel ei ütle enamikule inimestest midagi. Kuid line chart showing temperature rising over 100 years tells a story everyone understands immediately. Data visualization is the art of making information visible, understandable, and impactful.
In 1858, Florence Nightingale — yes, the famous nurse — created a „polaarpindaladiagramm“ (sektordiagrammi liik), mis näitas, et Krimmi sõja sõdurid surid rohkem disease (blue) than combat (red). Tema visualiseering oli nii selge ja šokeeriv, et Briti valitsus reformis kohe sõjaväehaiglaid. Üks diagramm päästis tuhandeid elusid. Andmete visualiseerimine võib muuta maailma.
Loo arvutustabelitest diagramme ja graafikuid. Tulp-, joon- ja sektordiagrammid — lihtsaim viis andmete visualiseerimise alustamiseks.

The most powerful web visualization library. Create ANY chart for the web. Powers visualizations at the New York Times, BBC, and NASA.
When government budgets are open data, citizens can see exactly where money goes. In Brazil, aitasid avatud kuluandmed ajakirjanikel avastada, et poliitikud kulutasid miljoneid luksuslikele einetele, samal ajal kui koolidel polnud õpikuid. Skandaal tõi kaasa reformid. Ilma avatud andmeteta oleks korruptsioon varjatuks jäänud.
Avatud transpordiandmed võimaldavad rakendusi nagu Citymapper, Moovit, and Transit — all built on open bus/train data published by cities. Open weather data powers every weather app on your phone. Entrepreneurs build billion-dollar businesses on open data — creating jobs and services that help everyone.
The Human Genome Project published all its data openly — this single decision led to thousands of medical breakthroughs, cancer treatments, and genetic therapies. If the data had been locked behind patents, decades of medical progress would have been lost. Every time scientists share data openly, they multiply the world's ability to solve problems.
OpenStreetMapi vabatahtlikud kaardistasid Haitit (2010), Nepali (2015), Puerto Ricot (2017), Türgit (2023) ja kümneid teisi katastroofipiirkondi. Avatud satelliidiandmed allikast Copernicus (EU) ja Landsat (NASA) helps track floods, fires, and deforestation in real time. Open data literally saves lives.
Rich companies can afford to buy data. Poor communities can't. Open data means a student in rural Kenya has access to the same NASA satellite data as a researcher at Harvard. Open data is the great equalizer — knowledge shouldn't depend on your bank account.
When data is locked behind paywalls, only the wealthy know. When data is open, everyone can know. Open data is the Islamic value of knowledge sharing made manifest in the digital age. Knowledge belongs to humanity — not corporations.
Real projects for beginners — using real data!

open-meteo.com API + Python or LibreOffice Calc
Go to tasks.hotosm.org and pick an active task. Map buildings in an area that needs help. Many schools and universities organize mapathons — or start one at YOUR school! You'll be helping real disaster responders.
Your mapped buildings will be used by Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, and local emergency teams!
Vali mis tahes avatud andmestik (COVID-i statistika, õhukvaliteet, haridus, sport). Loo interaktiivne töölaud, kasutades Apache Superset (edasijõudnutele) või lihtsaid diagramme LibreOffice. Esitle seda oma klassile. Pärisandmed + visualiseering = mõjus lugude jutustamine.
Build a web page with your charts using HTML + Chart.js (JavaScript). Host it free on GitHub Pages!
Avaandmed tähendavad küsimust „Milline on selle linna keskmine sissetulek?”, MITTE „Kui suur on Ahmedi palk?”. Rahvastikustatistikat, keskkonnamõõtmisi ja valitsuse kulutusi on ohutu jagada. Üksikisikute isikuandmeid — terviseandmeid, aadresse ja finantsandmeid — tuleb ALATI kaitsta.
Even with "anonymized" data, combining multiple datasets can sometimes identify individuals. In 2006, Netflix avaldas „anonüümitud” filmihinnangud as open data for a competition. Researchers at UT Austin cross-referenced it with public IMDb ratings and re-identified specific Netflix users, paljastades nende poliitilised ja seksuaalsed eelistused. Netflix kaevati kohtusse. Õppetund: anonüümimine on keerulisem, kui paistab.
Avatud kuritegevuse andmeid saab kasutada politseitöö parandamiseks — või linnaosade diskrimineerimiseks. Avatud terviseandmed võivad parandada meditsiini — või anda kindlustusseltsidele põhjuse kindlustuskaitsest keelduda. ANDMED on neutraalsed. Eetiline küsimus on nende KASUTAMISES.
Kuid neid tuleb kasutada birr (righteousness), mitte kahju tekitamiseks. Kaardista oma kogukonda selle aitamiseks. Visualiseeri andmeid tõe nähtavale toomiseks. Ära kasuta andmeid kunagi diskrimineerimiseks, profileerimiseks ega rõhumiseks.
When data is locked away, only the powerful benefit. When data is open, everyone — students, scientists, journalists, activists, entrepreneurs — can use it to understand the world, solve problems, and hold power accountable. You now know where to find it, how to use it, and how to contribute to it. Go explore!
«وَأَلَنَّا لَهُ الْحَدِيدَ»
Avaandmed vähendavad tõkkeid inimeste ja teadmiste vahel. Kui andmed on vabalt kättesaadavad, saavad kõik ehitada, avastada ja luua. See on Alin Li tee. ✨
