🏆 PROJECT STORIES

Projektid, mis muutsid maailma

Every one of these started small. Look where they are now.

Started 1991 — A Student Project

🐧 Linux: From a Bedroom to Running the World

21-aastane Soome tudeng kirjutas: „Teen tasuta operatsioonisüsteemi, lihtsalt hobina.”

In 1991, Linus Torvalds was a 21-year-old computer science student at the University of Helsinki. He wanted a Unix-like operating system for his new PC but couldn't afford one. So he started writing his own — and posted a famous message to a newsgroup:

„Teen (vaba) operatsioonisüsteemi (lihtsalt hobi, sellest ei tule midagi nii suurt ja professionaalset nagu gnu) 386(486) AT-kloonidele.“— Linus Torvalds, August 25, 1991

That "hobby" is now the most important operating system in human history.

Linux töötab nüüd kõikjal — nutikelladest rahvusvahelise kosmosejaamani. See käitab Google'it, Amazoni, Facebooki, Netflixi, Teslat, SpaceXi rakette ja maailma finantssüsteeme. Linuse isiklik vara ületab $50 miljonit — Linuxi müügi asemel tänulike ettevõtete antud aktsiatest.

🌟 The Lesson

What you think is "just a hobby" might change the world. Share your work, even if it's not perfect. A student project from a small bedroom in Finland now runs human civilization.

Started 2003 — A Simple Blog Tool

📝 WordPress: blogist 43%-ni kogu veebist

Two developers forked an abandoned blog tool. Now it powers nearly half the internet.

In 2003, Matt Mullenweg was a 19-year-old college student who loved blogging. The blog platform he used (b2/cafelog) was abandoned by its creator. Instead of giving up, Matt and Mike Little forked the code and created WordPress.

They could have made it proprietary and charged for it. Instead, they kept it open source under the GPL license — and changed the internet forever.

Matti ettevõtte Automattic (pakub WordPress.com-i majutust) väärtuseks hinnatakse nüüd üle $7.5 miljardit. Tarkvara on tasuta — äri tehakse sellele rajatud teenustega. TechCrunch, BBC America, The Rolling Stones, Sony Music — kõik kasutavad WordPressi.

🌟 The Lesson

When something dies, don't cry — fork it! WordPress was born from an abandoned project. The power of open-source licensing means code never truly dies. And you can build a billion-dollar company while keeping the code free.

Started 2003 — A Small Startup

📱 Android: tundmatust iduettevõttest 3 miljardi seadmeni

Google bought a tiny company for $50M. It became the world's most-used operating system.

Androidi lõi väike 8 inimesega idufirma Andy Rubini juhtimisel. Nende algne idee? Operatsioonisüsteem digikaameratele! Google ostis ettevõtte 2005. aastal kõigest $50 miljonit — and pivoted it to phones.

By making Android open source, Google did something brilliant: any phone maker could use it for free. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and hundreds of others adopted it. Within years, Android crushed Nokia, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone.

🌟 The Lesson

Started 1994 — Nearly Died, Then Resurrected

🧊 Blender: väljasuremise äärelt Hollywoodi

The community literally crowdfunded its freedom. Now it rivals Maya and 3DS Max.

Blender was created in 1994 as a proprietary in-house tool by a Dutch animation studio called NeoGeo. When the studio went bankrupt in 2002, Blender was about to disappear forever.

Kogukond kogus raha vaid 7 weeks!

vs Maya's $1,875/year

Today Blender is used by Netflix, Ubisoft, Epic Games, ja suured Hollywoodi stuudiod. See on täielik 3D-loomekomplekt — modelleerimine, animatsioon, videotöötlus, komposiitimine, liikumise jälgimine ja mängude loomine. Kõik tasuta. Maya maksab $1,875 aastas. Blender maksab $0.

🌟 The Lesson

Tasuta tööriist, mille taga on kirglik kogukond, ületab lõpuks iga kalli omandusliku alternatiivi.

Started 1993 — "You Can't Sell Free Software"

🎩 Red Hat: From "Impossible" Business to $34 Billion

Everyone said you can't make money from free software. Red Hat became the first $1B open-source company.

When Bob Young and Marc Ewing started Red Hat in 1993, everyone laughed. "You're going to sell something that's free? That's the worst business model ever!" They heard this constantly.

Red Hat's model: Linux is free, but enterprise support, certification, and reliability are worth paying for. They were right. Red Hat became the first open-source company to reach $1 billion in revenue (2012) ning IBM ostis nad $34 miljardit in 2019 — the largest software acquisition in history.

🌟 The Lesson

„Tasuta tarkvaraga ei saa raha teenida“ oli tehnoloogiaajaloo suurim müüt. Red Hat tõestas, et kui tarkvara on tasuta, liigub VÄÄRTUS asjatundlikkusse, tugiteenustesse ja usaldusse. Sa ei müü koodi — sa müüd kindlustunnet.

Started 1996 — A University Project

🔶 VLC: meediapleier, mis on kõigil

Started as a student project at a French engineering school. Downloaded 3.5+ billion times.

VLC started at the École Centrale Paris as a student project to stream videos across the campus network. When the students graduated, they open-sourced it. Jean-Baptiste Kempf took over maintenance and turned it into the world's most popular media player.

VLC plays literally everything — any video format, any audio format, DVDs, streams, network sources. No codecs to install, no ads, no tracking, no subscription. Just works.

VLC has no business model — it's truly non-profit. Jean-Baptiste Kempf turned down offers to add ads that would have made him millions. He said: "VLC is about trust. Users trust us because we respect them."

🌟 The Lesson

Iga edu ei pea olema rahaline. VLC edu mõõdavad usaldus, 3.5 miljardit allalaadimist ja maailm, kus väike ikoon tähendab „mängib kõike”. Vahel on suurim edu miljarditele inimestele kasulik olla.

👤 PEOPLE STORIES

You don't have to create Linux. Every contribution opens doors.

🐧

Linus Torvalds

Created Linux at age 21

Soome tudeng tahtis oma arvutile lihtsalt tasuta operatsioonisüsteemi. Ta jagas oma „hobiprojekti” maailmaga. Tema vara väärtus ületab nüüd $50 miljonit. Ta muutis inimtsivilisatsiooni igaveseks, müümata ainsatki litsentsi.

🧵 ÜHINE JOON

Mis on kõigil neil lugudel ühist?

1️⃣

They all started small

Tudengiprojekt. Hüljatud tööriista haru. Väike 8 inimesega idufirma. Ideega õpetaja. Ükski neist ei alustanud suurelt.

2️⃣

They chose to share

At every turning point, they chose openness over control. They trusted the community. They gave away their best work.

3️⃣

The community made it great
