The tiny connector that changed the world. From its invention in 1996 to USB4 today — every type, every speed, every cable explained simply so you'll never be confused again!
The most successful connector standard in computing history.
Universal means it works on everything — computers, phones, tablets, cameras, keyboards, mice, printers, game controllers, and millions of other devices. Serial means data travels one bit at a time through the cable. Bus is a technical term for a communication pathway between devices.
Before USB was invented in 1996, connecting devices to a computer was a nightmare. You needed different cables and ports for every single device — serial ports, parallel ports, PS/2 ports, SCSI, DIN connectors — each with its own shape, its own drivers, and its own problems. You often had to restart your computer just to recognize a new device!
USB solved all of this with one standard. Üht tüüpi kaabel. Ühenda see. See töötab. Taaskäivitust pole vaja. See lihtne mõte muutis kõike.
USB was created by a group of 7 companies working together in 1994–1996:
The lead architect was Ajay Bhatt, Indias sündinud Inteli insener. Ta tahtis teha seadmete ühendamise sama lihtsaks kui lambi pistikusse panemise. Täna haldab USB-standardit USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) — a non-profit with over 700 member companies.
USB-A connectors are famously hard to plug in correctly on the first try. Ajay Bhatt said making it reversible would have doubled the cost, nii et valiti odavam ühesuunaline lahendus. See "USB-frustratsioon" on üks peamisi põhjuseid, miks USB-C kavandati reversible — works both ways!
From 1.5 Mbps in 1996 to 80 Gbps today — a 53,000x improvement!
First USB standard released. Two speeds: 1.5 Mbps (aeglane kiirus) ja 12 Mbps (täiskiirus). Kasutati peamiselt klaviatuuride ja hiirte jaoks. Kasutuselevõtt oli väga aeglane — kellelgi polnud veel USB-porte!
Bug fixes and improvements to USB 1.0. This was the version that Apple put into the original iMac G3 in 1998 — the colorful computer that helped make USB mainstream. Apple boldly removed ALL old ports and went USB-only!
Speed jumped to 480 Mbps — 40x faster than USB 1.1! This made USB useful for hard drives, cameras, and printers. USB 2.0 became the dominant standard for over a decade. The flat rectangular USB-A and square USB-B connectors became universal.
Speed exploded to 5 Gbps — 10x faster than USB 2.0! Recognizable by the blue inside on USB-A ports. Made external hard drives actually fast. Also introduced more power for charging.
The new USB-C connector is released — small, oval, and reversible (enam pole valetpidi sisestamist!). Apple'i 12-tolline MacBook oli esimene ainult USB-C-ga sülearvuti. USB-C pidi lõpuks asendama kõik teised pistikud.
Speeds reach 10 Gbps and then 20 Gbps. USB nimetused muutuvad väga segaseks (USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2x2...). Isegi eksperdid satuvad segadusse. USB-IF-i kritiseeritakse laialdaselt halbade nimetuste pärast.
USB4 merges with Thunderbolt 3 (tänu sellele, et Intel tegi selle litsentsitasuta kasutatavaks). Kiirus ulatub 40 Gbps, seejärel 80 Gbps with USB4 v2.0 (2022). USB-C is now the ONLY connector. Can carry data, video (DisplayPort/HDMI), and 240W of power — all through one cable!
The European Union legally mandates USB-C as the standard charging port for all phones, tablets, cameras, and laptops by 2024. Even Apple was forced to switch the iPhone from Lightning to USB-C! The dream of one universal cable is finally becoming reality.
The shape of the plug — not the speed. Here's every type you'll encounter.
The original USB plug you've seen on every computer for 25+ years. Goes on the host side (computer, charger, TV). Has 4 pins (USB 2.0) or 9 pins (USB 3.0 — blue inside).
Found on: Computers, chargers, TVs, game consoles, USB sticks, keyboards, mice
Problem: Pole pööratav! Ühendamiseks tundub alati vaja minevat 3 katset.
The "other end" of old USB cables. Almost square with beveled top corners. Goes on the device side (printer, scanner).
Found on: Printers, scanners, some audio equipment, Arduino boards!
Status: Nüüdseks enamasti USB-C-ga asendatud. Näed seda veel vanematel printeritel.
Väiksem USB-B kaasaskantavatele seadmetele, populaarne aastatel 2000–2010. Väikese trapetsi kujuline (ülalt laiem, alt kitsam).
Found on: Vanad digikaamerad, varased MP3-mängijad, PS3 puldid, mõned GPS-seadmed
Status: Completely obsolete. Replaced first by Micro-USB, then by USB-C.
Thinner and more durable than Mini-USB. Was the standard for all Android phones from ~2010 to ~2018. Also used by Kindle, PS4 controllers, Bluetooth speakers, and thousands of accessories.
Found on: Vanemad Android-telefonid, Kindle, PS4 pult, akupangad, odav elektroonika
Problem: Pole pööratav, habras (port puruneb ajaga kergesti), ainult USB 2.0 kiirus.
The best USB connector ever made. Väike, ovaalne ja reversible — you can NEVER plug it in wrong! Supports USB 2.0 through USB4, Thunderbolt 3/4, DisplayPort, HDMI, and up to 240W charging.
Found on: Kõik uued telefonid (Android ja iPhone 15+), sülearvutid, tahvlid, Nintendo Switch, kõrvaklapid, monitorid — kõik uus!
Superpower: ÜKS kaabel edastab andmeid (80 Gbps), videot (4K/8K) ja toidet (240W) — korraga!
Apple's own connector, introduced in 2012 for the iPhone 5. It IS reversible (Apple beat USB-C by 2 years!) but it's proprietary — only Apple can make official cables, and they charge a premium.
Found on: iPhones (5 through 14), older iPads, AirPods
Status: DEAD! The EU forced Apple to switch to USB-C starting with iPhone 15 (2023). Lightning will disappear completely within a few years.
The version = how fast. The connector = the shape. They're separate things!
USB-C kaabel võib kasutada USB 2.0 (aeglane), USB 3.2 (kiire) või USB4 (ülikiire) standardit. See shape of the plug doesn't tell you the speed. See on segaduse põhjus #1! Kontrolli alati versiooni, mitte ainult pistikut.
| Version | Turundusnimi | Suurim kiirus | Year | Real-World Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB 1.0 | Aeglane/täiskiirus | 12 Mbps | 1996 | ~1 MB/s (a song takes minutes) |
| USB 2.0 | Hi-Speed | 480 Mbps | 2000 | ~35 MB/s (a song in seconds) |
| USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen 1 | SuperSpeed | 5 Gbps | 2008 | ~400 MB/s (a movie in 10s) |
| USB 3.1 / 3.2 Gen 2 | SuperSpeed+ | 10 Gbps | 2013 | ~1 GB/s (a movie in 5s) |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 | SuperSpeed 20Gbps | 20 Gbps | 2017 | ~2 GB/s (a movie in 2s) |
| USB4 Gen 3 | USB4 40Gbps | 40 Gbps | 2019 | ~4 GB/s (a movie in 1s) |
| USB4 v2.0 | USB4 80Gbps | 80 Gbps | 2022 | ~8 GB/s (entire game in 2s) |
USB naming is infamously confusing. USB 3.0 was renamed to "USB 3.1 Gen 1", then renamed AGAIN to "USB 3.2 Gen 1" — even though nothing changed! USB-IF has been widely criticized for this mess. Rule of thumb: ignore marketing names. Look at the Gbps number. 5 Gbps = USB 3.0, 10 Gbps = USB 3.1, 20 Gbps = USB 3.2, 40+ Gbps = USB4.
USB doesn't just transfer data — it delivers power too!
5V × 0.5A — Enough for mice, keyboards
5V × 0.9A — Slow phone charging
5V × 1.5A — Dedicated charging ports
5V × 3A — Standard USB-C charging
Up to 20V × 5A — Charges laptops!
Up to 48V × 5A — Charges ANYTHING!
With USB PD, one USB-C charger can charge your phone, tablet, laptop, and even some gaming laptops! No more carrying 5 different chargers. This is why the EU mandated USB-C — one charger for everything reduces e-waste and saves money.
The golden rules of USB compatibility.
USB 3.0 seade töötab USB 2.0 pesas — lihtsalt aeglasema USB 2.0 kiirusega. USB 2.0 seade töötab USB 3.0 pesas — samuti USB 2.0 kiirusega. Versioone võib alati kombineerida — need töötavad selle kiirusega, mis on slowest link (seade, kaabel VÕI port).
✅ Always works — just slowerUSB-A and USB-C are different physical shapes. You need an adapter or a cable with USB-A on one end and USB-C on the other (very common!). These are cheap and widely available.
🔄 Vajalik on adapterAny USB-C cable fits in any USB-C port. But the speed and power depend on the cable's rating! A cheap USB-C cable might only support USB 2.0 speed (480 Mbps), while an expensive one supports USB4 (40+ Gbps) and 240W power.
✅ Always fits — but check cable ratingUSB4 only works with USB-C connectors. There is no USB4 with a USB-A plug. This is deliberate — USB4 needs all 24 pins in the USB-C connector. If you want the fastest speeds, you MUST use USB-C on both ends.
❌ USB4 = USB-C onlyThis is the biggest trap: a USB-C cable might support USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), USB 3.2 (20 Gbps), USB4 (40 Gbps), or Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps). They ALL look the same! A cheap $2 cable and a $40 Thunderbolt cable have the same connector but vastly different capabilities.
⚠️ Look for speed rating on packagingYour actual speed is limited by the slowest component in the chain: the port, the cable, OR the device. A USB4 port with a USB 2.0 cable = USB 2.0 speed. A USB 3.0 device with a USB4 cable in a USB4 port = USB 3.0 speed. Every link matters!
💡 Speed = minimum of port, cable, and deviceIf your USB-A port or plug has a blue plastic insert inside, it's USB 3.0 or faster (5+ Gbps). Black or white = usually USB 2.0. This is the easiest visual identifier.
Väike välgunool ⚡ USB-C pesa kõrval tähendab, et see toetab Thunderbolt (40 Gbps+). See on kiireim USB-C-pordi tüüp. Levinud MacBookides ja tippklassi sülearvutites.
Aku sümbol 🔋 USB-pesa kõrval tähendab, et pesa annab laadimiseks lisavoolu isegi siis, kui arvuti on välja lülitatud või unerežiimis.
The letters "SS" stamped near a port mean SuperSpeed (USB 3.0 = 5 Gbps). "SS10" = USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). "SS20" = USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps).
Väike monitoriikoon 🖥️ USB-C pesa kõrval tähendab, et see saab väljastada videot välisele ekraanile. Kõik USB-C pesad seda ei toeta!
Iga kaabel ei sobi! Vajad USB-C-kaablit, mis toetab Toite edastamine (PD) and a charger with enough wattage (usually 45W–100W for laptops). A cheap phone-charging USB-C cable might not carry enough power for a laptop. Check the cable's watt rating.
Cheap cables often only support USB 2.0 speed (480 Mbps) and limited power. Expensive cables support USB4/Thunderbolt (40+ Gbps), 240W power delivery, and video output. They have more wires inside (up to 24!), better shielding, and certified chips. You get what you pay for.
Yes! USB-C supports DisplayPort Alt Mode which can drive 4K and even 8K displays. Many monitors have USB-C inputs now. With one cable, your laptop can send video, data, AND receive power from the monitor. But not all USB-C ports support video — check for the monitor symbol.
Mitte päris. Thunderbolt is Intel's technology that USES the USB-C connector but adds extra capabilities (guaranteed 40 Gbps, PCIe for external GPUs, daisy chaining). All Thunderbolt 3/4 ports are USB-C, but not all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt. Look for the ⚡ lightning bolt symbol.
Eventually, yes — but it'll take many more years. USB-A has been around for 25+ years and there are billions of devices using it. Desktop computers will keep USB-A ports for a long time. But new laptops, phones, and tablets are USB-C only. By 2030, USB-A will be rare on new devices.
It depends on the version! USB 2.0: 5 meters max. USB 3.0: Kuni 3 meetrit. USB4/Thunderbolt: usually 0.8–2 meters for passive cables. Longer cables need active electronics inside (active cables), which are more expensive. For very long runs, use a USB extension hub.
Väga halvasti valmistatud kaabel võib anda vale pinge või voolu, mis võib seadmeid kahjustada. See oli suur probleem varajaste USB-C kaablitega (Google’i insener Benson Leung sai tuntuks sadade kaablite katsetamise ja arvustamisega, leides palju ohtlikke). Osta alati usaldusväärsete kaubamärkide tooteid and look for USB-IF certification.
You now understand more about USB than most adults. From the first 12 Mbps connection in 1996 to today's 80 Gbps USB4 — from the flat USB-A rectangle to the reversible USB-C — you know it all. Next time someone is confused about USB cables, you can be the expert!
