Lesson 1: What is a Computer?
Duration: 1.5 hours ยท Learn the basics of what makes a computer tick!

A computer is an electronic machine that can store, process, and display information. Computers help us do amazing things โ€” from writing stories to exploring outer space! But how do they work? Let's find out!

The first computer, called ENIAC, was built in 1945. It weighed more than 27 tons โ€” that's heavier than five elephants! Today, a smartphone in your pocket is millions of times more powerful.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Types of Computers

Computers come in many shapes and sizes. Each type is designed for different tasks:

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

โš™๏ธ Hardware vs. Software

Every computer is made up of two important things:

Hardware = the physical parts you can touch (screen, keyboard, mouse, cables).
Software = the programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do (apps, games, the operating system).

Think of it this way: Hardware is like your body, and software is like your brain telling your body what to do!

๐Ÿ”Œ The Main Parts of a Computer

Click each part below to learn what it does:

๐Ÿง
CPU (Processor)
The "brain" of the computer. It does all the thinking and calculations. The faster the CPU, the quicker your computer works. Measured in GHz (gigahertz).
Tap to learn more
๐ŸŽ›๏ธ
RAM (Memory)
Short-term memory. It holds the things you're working on RIGHT NOW. More RAM means you can run more programs at the same time without slowing down.
Tap to learn more
๐Ÿ’พ
Storage (Hard Drive / SSD)
Long-term memory. It saves your files, photos, and programs even when the computer is turned off. SSDs are faster than old hard drives (HDD).

Lesson 2: Operating System Basics
Duration: 1.5 hours ยท Explore the desktop and make it yours!

๐Ÿค” What is an Operating System?

An Operating System (OS) is the most important software on your computer. It manages everything โ€” the screen, the keyboard, your files, and all the programs you use. Without an OS, your computer would be like a car without a driver!

The OS is the "boss" that controls all the hardware and software. It lets you open apps, save files, connect to the internet, and much more.

๐ŸŒ Popular Operating Systems

Lesson 3: Files and Folders
Duration: 2 hours ยท Organize your digital world like a pro!

๐Ÿ“„ What is a File?

A file is any piece of information saved on your computer. Just like a physical document in a filing cabinet, a digital file has a name and contains content. Every photo you take, every document you type, and every song you listen to is a file!

๐Ÿ“ What is a Folder?

A folder (also called a directory) is like a container that holds files. You can put folders inside other folders to stay organized โ€” just like boxes inside bigger boxes!

Think of it this way:
๐Ÿซ School = Your Computer
๐Ÿ“‚ Classroom = A Folder
๐Ÿ“„ Worksheet = A File
๐Ÿ“‚ Classroom โ†’ ๐Ÿ“‚ Math Folder โ†’ ๐Ÿ“„ homework.odt = Folders inside folders!

๐Ÿ“ File Names and Extensions

Every file has two parts in its name: the name and the extension. The extension tells the computer what type of file it is.

ExtensionTypeOpens WithExample
.odt๐Ÿ“ Document (Open format)LibreOffice Writermy_story.odt
.docx๐Ÿ“ Document (Microsoft)LibreOffice Writerreport.docx
.pdf๐Ÿ“„ Read-only documentPDF Viewercertificate.pdf

.mp4๐ŸŽฌ VideoVideo Playermovie.mp4
.txt๐Ÿ“ƒ Plain textText Editornotes.txt
.zip๐Ÿ“ฆ Compressed archiveArchive Managerbackup.zip
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Open Document formats (.odt, .ods, .odp) are open standards โ€” they can be opened by any program, not just one company's software. That's the open-source way!

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ File Operations: The Essential Skills

๐Ÿ“„ Creating a New File or Folder โ–ผ

Create a new folder: Open the File Manager โ†’ right-click in empty space โ†’ choose "New Folder" โ†’ type a name โ†’ press Enter.

Create a new file: Open an application (like LibreOffice Writer) โ†’ write your content โ†’ go to File โ†’ Save As โ†’ choose location โ†’ name your file โ†’ click Save.

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N creates a new folder in most file managers!

โœ๏ธ Renaming Files and Folders โ–ผ

Method 1: Right-click the file โ†’ choose "Rename" โ†’ type the new name โ†’ press Enter.

Method 2: Click the file once to select it โ†’ press F2 โ†’ type the new name โ†’ press Enter.

Important rules: Don't use special characters like / \ : * ? " < > | in file names. Don't change the file extension unless you know what you're doing!

๐Ÿ“‹ Copy, Cut, and Paste โ–ผ

Copy (Ctrl + C): Makes a duplicate. The original stays in place.

Cut (Ctrl + X): Moves the file. The original is removed from the old location.

Paste (Ctrl + V): Places the copied/cut file in the new location.

Think of it like this: Copy = photocopy a page (original stays). Cut = pick up the page and move it somewhere else.

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Deleting and the Trash โ–ผ

Delete: Select the file โ†’ press the Delete key. The file goes to the Trash (not gone forever!).

Restore: Open the Trash โ†’ right-click the file โ†’ choose "Restore" to bring it back.

Permanent delete: Empty the Trash to remove files forever. Be careful โ€” you can't undo this!

Shortcut: Shift + Delete permanently deletes without using the Trash (use with caution!).

๐Ÿ” Searching for Files โ–ผ

Can't find a file? Use the Search feature:

In File Manager: Click the search icon (๐Ÿ”) or press Ctrl + F, then type part of the file name.

From Desktop: Press the Super key and start typing โ€” Linux will search for files and apps!

Tip: Give your files clear, descriptive names so they're easy to find later. "math_homework_chapter3.odt" is much better than "document1.odt"!

๐ŸŽฎ Activity: Treasure Hunt โ€” Organize the Messy Folder!

Your teacher will give you a folder full of messy, disorganized files. Your mission:

  1. Create folders named: "Documents", "Images", "Music", "Videos", "Other"
  2. Move each file into the correct folder based on its extension
  3. Rename any files that have confusing names (like "asdfgh.jpg" โ†’ "sunset_photo.jpg")
  4. Delete any duplicate files you find
  5. Take a screenshot of your organized folder to show your teacher!
The average person has over 2,000 files on their computer. Good organization saves you about 30 minutes per week searching for lost files โ€” that's over 26 hours per year!
โœ๏ธ
Quick Check: Lesson 3
Show what you know about files and folders!
1What does a file extension tell us?
AWho created the file

Lesson 4: Storage and Memory
Duration: 1.5 hours ยท Understand where your data lives!

๐Ÿง  RAM vs. Storage: What's the Difference?

People often confuse memory (RAM) and storage, but they do very different jobs:

๐Ÿง  RAM (Memory) = Your desk at school. It holds what you're working on RIGHT NOW. When you close your notebook (turn off the computer), the desk is cleared.

๐Ÿ’พ Storage = Your backpack or locker. It holds all your stuff permanently โ€” books, notebooks, lunch โ€” even when you're not using them.
Feature๐Ÿง  RAM (Memory)๐Ÿ’พ Storage (Hard Drive / SSD)
PurposeHolds data being used right nowSaves data permanently
SpeedVery fast โšกSlower (HDD) or Fast (SSD)
When power is offData is LOST โŒData is KEPT โœ…
Typical size4 GB โ€“ 16 GB128 GB โ€“ 2 TB
AnalogyDesk at schoolBackpack / locker

๐Ÿ“ Understanding Data Sizes

Data is measured in bytes. Here's how the sizes work, from smallest to biggest:

UnitSizeWhat It Can Hold
1 Byte (B)1 characterOne letter, like "A"
1 Kilobyte (KB)1,000 bytesA short text message
1 Megabyte (MB)1,000 KBOne high-quality photo, or one song
1 Gigabyte (GB)1,000 MBAbout 250 songs or 1 movie
1 Terabyte (TB)1,000 GBAbout 500 hours of video!
If you printed all the data in 1 Terabyte as text on paper, the stack would be about 16 km (10 miles) tall โ€” higher than most airplanes fly!

๐Ÿ’ฟ Types of Storage

๐Ÿ–ด
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
The traditional storage. Uses spinning magnetic disks. Cheaper but slower, and can break if dropped. Good for storing lots of data at low cost. You can sometimes hear it spinning!

โ˜๏ธ What is Cloud Storage?

Cloud storage means your files are saved on powerful computers (servers) on the internet instead of just on your own device. This has big advantages:

โœ… Advantagesโš ๏ธ Disadvantages
Access files from anywhereNeeds internet connection
Files are backed up automaticallyPrivacy concerns โ€” who can see your data?
Share files easily with othersFree plans have limited space
No risk of losing a USB driveMonthly fees for more storage
๐Ÿง Open-Source Cloud: Nextcloud is a free, open-source cloud storage solution. You or your school can run your own cloud server, keeping all data under your control! That's the Alin Li way โ€” open and independent.

๐Ÿ”Œ Safely Removing a USB Drive

Never just pull out a USB drive! Always "eject" it first to avoid losing data:

  1. Save and close any files you have open from the USB drive
  2. Find the USB icon in the file manager sidebar
  3. Click the "Eject" button (โ๏ธ) next to the drive name
  4. Wait for the notification saying "Safe to remove"
  5. Now you can safely unplug the USB drive
โœ๏ธ

DDelete everything on it
๐Ÿ“ฆ
Lesson 5: Software & Installation
Duration: 1.5 hours ยท Discover open-source software and install apps safely!

๐Ÿค” What is Software?

Software is a set of instructions (called code) that tells the computer what to do. There are different kinds of software:

TypeWhat It DoesExamples
๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Operating SystemRuns the whole computerLinux, Windows, macOS
๐Ÿ“ Application SoftwareHelps you do specific tasksLibreOffice, Firefox, GIMP

โš™๏ธ Utility SoftwareMaintains and protects the computerFile manager, backup tools, antivirus
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป Development ToolsFor creating new softwareVS Code, Python, Scratch

๐Ÿ”“ Open Source vs. Closed Source

This is one of the most important ideas at Alin Li! Software can be either open source or closed source (proprietary):

๐Ÿ”“ Open Source = The code is free and public. Anyone can use it, study it, change it, and share it. Like a recipe anyone can cook and improve!

๐Ÿ”’ Closed Source = The code is secret and owned by a company. You pay to use it, and you can't see or change how it works. Like a secret recipe only one restaurant knows.
Feature๐Ÿ”“ Open Source๐Ÿ”’ Closed Source

๐Ÿ“ฅ Installing Software on Linux

On Linux, installing software is easy and safe! There are several ways to do it:

๐Ÿช Method 1: Software Center (Easiest!) โ–ผ

The Software Center is like an app store for Linux. All apps are reviewed for safety.

  1. Open "Software Center" (or "Ubuntu Software" or "GNOME Software")
  2. Use the search bar to find the app you want (e.g., "GIMP")
  3. Click on the app to read its description and reviews
  4. Click "Install" โ€” you may need to enter your password
  5. Wait for the download and installation to finish
  6. Find your new app in the Application Menu and enjoy!
๐Ÿ’ป Method 2: Terminal Command (Intermediate) โ–ผ

The Terminal is a text-based way to control your computer. It's powerful and fast!

To install software, type: sudo apt install program-name

For example, to install GIMP: sudo apt install gimp

"sudo" means you're asking for administrator permission. "apt" is the package manager that downloads and installs the software safely.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Method 3: Flatpak / Snap Packages โ–ผ

Flatpak and Snap are modern ways to install apps that work on any Linux distribution. They keep apps sandboxed (isolated) for extra security.

Many apps are available on Flathub.org โ€” a website where you can browse and install Flatpak apps.

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Removing Software

To remove software you no longer need:

  1. Open the Software Center
  2. Go to the "Installed" tab to see all your apps
  3. Find the app you want to remove
  4. Click "Remove" or "Uninstall" and confirm
โš ๏ธ Safety Rules for Installing Software:
โ€ข Only install from trusted sources (Software Center, official websites)
โ€ข Never install software from unknown email attachments
โ€ข Read reviews and check ratings before installing
โ€ข Ask a teacher or parent if you're not sure about an app
