Every note you take is connected. Every thought has context. Every idea links to another. Logseq isn't a notes app โ it's a thinking tool that grows with you. Privacy-first, local-first, free forever.
Most note-taking apps treat your notes like files in folders โ you create a note, put it in a folder, and hope you remember where you put it. Over time, your notes become a graveyard of forgotten information.
Logseq is fundamentally different. It's built on three revolutionary ideas:
1. Everything is a block โ every bullet point is an independent unit that can be referenced, linked, embedded, and reused across your entire knowledge base. A single idea lives in one place but appears everywhere it's relevant.
2. Pages link to pages โ by typing [[Page Name]], you create a bidirectional link. If Page A links to Page B, then Page B automatically knows Page A referenced it. Your knowledge forms a web, not a tree.
3. Daily journal by default โ every day, Logseq opens a fresh journal page. You capture thoughts, meeting notes, tasks, and ideas throughout the day. Links and tags connect today's notes to everything you've ever written.
Created in 2020 by Tienson Qin, a Chinese-born developer living in New Zealand. Tienson was frustrated with Roam Research (a commercial outliner-style tool that cost $15/month and stored your data on their servers). He believed that a knowledge tool this important should be open source, local-first, and free.
Logseq quickly gained a passionate community. It's funded through Logseq Sync (optional paid cloud sync, $5/month) and sponsorships โ while the core app remains 100% free and open source under AGPL-3.0.
Every [[Page Reference]] creates a bidirectional link. When you open the page for "GPL", you'll see EVERY note you've ever written that mentions GPL โ automatically gathered from across your entire knowledge base. You never have to "file" anything. Just write, link, and Logseq does the organizing.
Link any page to any page with [[double brackets]]. Both pages know about each other. Your notes form a web of connections, not isolated files. When you open any page, you see EVERY reference from across your entire knowledge base โ without manually organizing anything.
Every bullet point is an independent block with its own unique ID. You can reference a SINGLE bullet from anywhere: ((block-id)). Edit it in one place, it updates everywhere. One idea, one source of truth, infinite appearances. No other notes app does this as naturally.
Every day starts with a blank page named today's date. Just start writing. No deciding "where should this go?" โ write now, organize later through links and tags. Over weeks and months, your journal becomes a searchable timeline of everything you've thought, learned, and done.
Logseq visualizes ALL your notes as an interactive graph โ nodes are pages, lines are links. You can SEE how your knowledge connects. Clusters of related ideas emerge visually. It's like looking at your brain from the outside. Zoom, filter, click to navigate โ your entire knowledge base in one view.
Your notes are stored as plain Markdown/Org-mode files on YOUR device. No cloud required. No account required. No internet required. Logseq reads files from a folder โ that's it. You can open the same files in any text editor. Your data is NEVER locked inside a proprietary database. Even if Logseq disappears tomorrow, your files remain perfectly readable.
Logseq has a built-in query engine. Ask your notes questions: "Show me all TODOs tagged #school due this week" or "Find all blocks mentioning [[Python]] created in the last 30 days." Advanced queries use Datalog (a logic programming language). Your notes become a queryable database โ not a passive archive.
Add structured data to any block with properties: type:: book, author:: Martin Dougiamas, rating:: 5, date:: 2024-03-15. Then query them: "Show all books rated 5 stars." This turns Logseq into a personal database โ track books, projects, contacts, recipes, anything with structured metadata.
200+ community plugins extend Logseq: Kanban boards, Pomodoro timers, mind maps, spaced repetition flashcards, AI integration, Git auto-commit, table views, calendar views, and more. Plus dozens of beautiful themes. The plugin system is open and anyone can build extensions.
Logseq includes a built-in whiteboard โ an infinite canvas where you can draw, place blocks from your notes, connect ideas visually, add images, and create spatial layouts. Think Miro or FigJam but integrated with your entire knowledge base. Draw a diagram and link it to your notes.
Full source code on GitHub. Audit every line. Fork it. Modify it. Self-host it. No vendor lock-in. No "free tier that gets worse." No sudden price increases. No "we're shutting down, export your data in 30 days." Open source means Logseq belongs to the community โ forever.

Go to logseq.com โ Download for your platform (Linux, Windows, macOS). Or install via package managers:
When you first open Logseq, it asks for a graph directory โ this is just a folder on your computer where all your notes will be stored as Markdown files. Choose any folder. That's it โ no account, no signup, no cloud.
Want to sync between devices? Point Logseq at a folder inside Syncthing (open source), Nextcloud, or Git. Or use Logseq's optional paid sync ($5/month). Your notes are just files โ any file sync works.
Logseq opens to today's journal page. Start typing. Use these essential patterns:
Write lecture notes in your daily journal with [[Course Name]] links. Before exams, open the course page โ ALL your notes from every lecture are gathered automatically. Use flashcard plugin for spaced repetition. Query: "Show all blocks tagged #exam-topic from [[Biology 101]]". Create a whiteboard connecting key concepts visually.
Create a page for each book: [[Atomic Habits]]. Add properties: author:: James Clear, rating:: 5, status:: finished. Write key takeaways as blocks. Link concepts to other books: "This connects to [[Deep Work]] โ both emphasize environment design." Over time, you build a personal library of interconnected ideas.
Document every technical decision: [[PostgreSQL]] vs [[MySQL]] with pros/cons blocks. Link to project pages: [[Project Alpha]]. When debugging, search your graph for similar issues. Tag solutions: #solved #linux #networking. Over months, your Logseq becomes a personal Stack Overflow.
Daily journal captures every meeting. Link people: [[Ahmed]], [[Sara]]. Tag tasks: TODO Follow up with [[Ahmed]] on budget. Query: "Show all open TODOs assigned to me this week." Open any person's page to see every meeting, decision, and task involving them โ automatic CRM from your notes.
Create pages for Surahs, Hadiths, scholars, and concepts. Link them: "In [[Surah Al-Baqarah]], verse 282 discusses financial contracts โ connects to [[Islamic Finance]] and [[Amanah]]." Tag by topic: #fiqh #aqeedah #tafseer. Over years, build a personal encyclopedia of interconnected Islamic knowledge that grows with every lesson and lecture.

The biggest mistake new users make: trying to create a perfect folder structure before writing anything. In Logseq, organization happens THROUGH links. Just write in your journal, use [[links]] generously, and structure will emerge organically. Trust the graph.
Create templates for meetings, book notes, weekly reviews, project kickoffs. Type /template to insert one. Example meeting template: Date, Attendees (linked!), Agenda, Decisions, Action Items (TODOs). Consistency without effort.
At the bottom of every page, Logseq shows "Linked References" โ every block from your entire graph that mentions this page. This is where MAGIC happens: ideas you forgot about resurface. Spend 5 minutes reviewing linked references on important pages.
Properties turn Logseq into a personal database. Track books (status:: reading), projects (deadline:: 2025-06-01), people (role:: mentor). Then query them: {{query (property status "reading")}}.
Point your Logseq folder at a Git repo. Use the "Git Auto-Commit" plugin to save every change. Push to GitHub/Gitea for free cloud backup + version history. Every edit is tracked โ you can never lose work.
Every Sunday, create a "Weekly Review" template: What did I learn? What went well? What's next? Link to the week's key pages. Over time, weekly reviews become an incredible journal of personal growth โ fully linked to your knowledge base.
Open the graph view (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+G) and zoom around. You'll discover connections you didn't know existed. Orphan pages (no links) are ideas that need connecting. Dense clusters are your strongest knowledge areas. The graph is a mirror of your mind.
Logseq is not just a place to store notes โ it's a tool that makes you think better. Every link you create strengthens a connection. Every journal entry adds to your timeline. Over months and years, your Logseq graph becomes the most valuable thing on your computer: a map of everything you know, think, and discover.
