The world's most popular learning management system. Used by 400+ million learners in 240+ countries. Built by teachers, for teachers. 100% free and open source. This is the platform that proves education should never have a paywall.
Moodle is a free, open-source Learning Management System (LMS) โ a website where teachers create courses, upload materials, give assignments, run quizzes, grade students, host forums, and manage an entire school or university online. Think of it as your own private school website where you control everything.
Created in 2002 by Martin Dougiamas, an Australian educator and computer scientist who believed that learning should be collaborative, constructive, and free from corporate control. His PhD research on how online tools can support teaching directly shaped Moodle's design.
Today, Moodle is the #1 LMS in the world by number of installations โ used by universities like MIT, Oxford, the Open University, and London School of Economics; by governments from Spain to Brazil to Indonesia; and by thousands of schools, companies, and non-profits in every country on Earth.
Moodle has over 200,000 registered sites worldwide (and many more unregistered). The largest single installation โ Open University UK โ serves 200,000+ students on one Moodle platform. During COVID-19, Moodle usage doubled in 3 months as entire countries moved education online. Spain's national education system moved 8 million students to Moodle-based platforms practically overnight.
From one man's PhD project to 400 million learners.
Martin Dougiamas, a sysadmin at Curtin University (Australia), starts his PhD on how web tools can improve teaching. He's frustrated with WebCT (proprietary LMS) โ expensive, rigid, and teacher-unfriendly. He begins coding an alternative.
First public release. Built on PHP + MySQL. The name "Moodle" stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment โ but Martin also liked that "moodle" is a verb meaning "to pleasantly tinker." Only a few hundred schools use it initially.
Universities in Europe, Latin America, and Asia adopt Moodle because it's free and flexible. The Open University UK โ Europe's largest university โ makes Moodle their primary platform. Moodle's community grows to thousands of developers contributing plugins.
Martin creates the company Moodle Pty Ltd to sustainably fund development. Revenue comes from a network of Moodle Partners โ certified companies worldwide that sell hosting, support, and customization.
Moodle Mobile app launches. Adoption reaches 65,000+ sites in 200+ countries. Major governments adopt Moodle as their national education platform (Spain, Brazil, Indonesia, India).
Demand explodes. Usage doubles in weeks. Countries that had Moodle infrastructure survived the transition to online learning. Countries that didn't struggled catastrophically. Moodle becomes recognized as critical education infrastructure.
Moodle 4.0 brings a completely redesigned UI โ modern, clean, mobile-first. Moodle LMS 4.3+ adds AI features (content generation, adaptive learning paths). MoodleNet launches as a social network for sharing educational resources openly.

Blackboard costs $20,000โ$200,000/year for a university. Moodle costs $0 for the software. Even with managed hosting ($2,000โ$20,000/year for a Moodle Partner), it's 10xโ50x cheaper than proprietary alternatives โ with MORE features, MORE customization, and YOU own your data.
The Open University UK (200,000+ students) switched from proprietary LMS to Moodle and estimated annual savings of ยฃ5โ10 million in licensing fees alone. The money saved was reinvested into improving the actual learning experience โ more tutors, better content, more student support. This is what happens when technology stops being a cost center and becomes an enabler.
Moodle uses the certified partner model. Over 100 Moodle Partners in 50+ countries pay Moodle HQ a percentage of their revenue for the right to use the "Certified Moodle Partner" badge. These partners sell:
Managed Moodle hosting
Setup and customization
Custom branded themes
24/7 SLA support
Teacher & admin training
Bespoke development
Moodle also offers MoodleCloud โ a directly hosted version for schools that don't want to self-host. Free tier (up to 50 users), Starter ($130/yr for 100 users), and Premium plans. This competes directly with Google Classroom but with far more features.
Moodle Workplace is the commercial version for corporate training โ adds multi-tenancy (one install for many departments), reporting dashboards, compliance tracking, and HR integrations. This is Moodle's open-core offering for enterprises. Available only through Moodle Partners.
Three options โ from 5 minutes to full server control.

MoodleNet is Moodle's newest project โ a federated social network where educators share and curate Open Educational Resources (OER). Think of it as "Pinterest for teachers" but open source and decentralized.
Teachers create collections of resources (lessons, quizzes, worksheets, videos) and share them publicly. Other teachers can follow, remix, and adapt these resources for their own classes. Because it's federated (like Mastodon), no single company controls it โ any school can run their own MoodleNet instance that connects to all others.
A biology teacher in Kenya creates an excellent lesson on cell division. A teacher in Indonesia finds it on MoodleNet, translates it, and adapts it for her students. A teacher in Brazil adds interactive H5P activities. The lesson keeps getting better as it travels the world โ all free, all open, all shared. This is the future of education.
Moodle is already used by Islamic schools, Quran memorization programs, Arabic language institutes, and mosque education committees worldwide. Here's how:
Track memorization progress, tajweed practice, audio submissions
Fiqh, Hadith, Seerah courses with quizzes and certificates
Full RTL support. Arabic interface. Speaking/writing assignments
Manage enrollment, attendance, grades, parent communication
Students abroad can join online โ no physical presence needed
Issue certificates for course completion โ Quran, Arabic, Islamic studies
Al-Azhar University โ the world's most prestigious Islamic university, founded in 970 CE โ uses Moodle-based platforms for online courses reaching students across the Middle East and Africa. If it's good enough for Al-Azhar's 1,055-year legacy, it's good enough for any Islamic school.
The first word revealed was "Read!" โ a command to seek knowledge. Moodle makes education accessible to every student on Earth, regardless of wealth, location, or background. When a tool enables learning for 400 million people for free, it fulfills the spirit of this command. Knowledge should never have a paywall.
Moodle's community is one of the largest in open source โ driven by educators, not just developers. This makes it unique: the people who USE Moodle (teachers) directly shape how it works.
How to participate: Join the forums at moodle.org/forums, contribute translations for your language, develop plugins, report bugs, write documentation, attend MoodleMoots (annual conferences), or simply share your Moodle teaching tips with other educators.
The most common Moodle mistake: uploading 50 PDFs and calling it a "course." Good Moodle courses have variety โ quizzes, forums, videos, H5P activities, peer review. Think: "If I were a 13-year-old, would I want to use this?" If the answer is no, redesign it.
Moodle's default look can be improved dramatically with themes. Boost (default in Moodle 4.x) is already good, but Moove and Academi (both free) make Moodle look beautiful and modern. First impressions matter โ students engage more with an attractive interface.
These two plugins transform Moodle from a file repository into an interactive learning environment. H5P adds interactive content (videos with embedded quizzes, drag-and-drop, flashcards). BigBlueButton adds live video classes. Both are free.
Don't try to use every feature on day one. Start with: (1) upload course materials, (2) create one quiz, (3) open one forum for questions. Once you're comfortable, add assignments, badges, certificates. Moodle scales with your ambition.
The #1 reason Moodle implementations fail: teachers aren't trained. Invest in teacher training BEFORE launching. Moodle has free courses at learn.moodle.org โ including "Moodle Teaching Basics" (a free course about how to teach with Moodle, built ON Moodle!).
400 million learners. 240 countries. 130 languages. Zero cost. Moodle proves that the world's best learning platform doesn't need a paywall. It needs a community. And that community โ teachers, developers, translators, administrators โ has built something extraordinary: a classroom for the entire world.
