๐Ÿ”’๐Ÿ“น Alin Li ยท Secure Home Cameras

Access Cameras Anywhere,
Without Opening Your Network

Most people expose their home cameras to the internet with port forwarding โ€” leaving their ENTIRE network vulnerable to hackers. Tailscale creates a private, encrypted tunnel so ONLY your devices can see your cameras. Zero ports opened. Zero risk. 100% open source.

The Problem ๐ŸšจSet It Up โšก
๐Ÿšจ THE PROBLEM

Why Port Forwarding is Dangerous

The way most people access cameras remotely is a security disaster.

๐Ÿ”“ What Most People Do (WRONG)

You install a camera at home. You want to see it from work or while traveling. The internet says: "Just set up port forwarding on your router!" You open port 8080, point it at your camera's IP, and now you can see your camera from anywhere at http://your-public-ip:8080.

The problem? You just punched a hole in your firewall. That hole is visible to EVERY hacker, bot, and scanner on the internet โ€” all 4+ billion IP addresses. Shodan.io (a search engine for internet-connected devices) indexes millions of exposed cameras within hours. Your camera โ€” and potentially your entire home network โ€” is now accessible to anyone who finds that open port.

๐Ÿ”ด Port Forwarding (Dangerous)

โŒ Opens a hole in your firewall visible to the ENTIRE internet

โŒ Bots scan for open ports 24/7 โ€” they WILL find yours

โŒ Camera login pages are often weak (default passwords)

โŒ Camera firmware has known vulnerabilities

โŒ Attackers can pivot from camera to your entire network

โŒ Your public IP exposes your location

โŒ No encryption by default on most cameras

โŒ Shodan indexes your camera within hours

๐ŸŸข Tailscale (Safe)

โœ… ZERO ports opened โ€” firewall stays completely closed

โœ… Nothing visible to internet scanners

โœ… Only YOUR devices on YOUR Tailscale network can connect

โœ… End-to-end WireGuard encryption

โœ… Even if camera has vulnerabilities โ€” it's not exposed

โœ… Your IP address stays hidden

โœ… Every connection is authenticated + encrypted

โœ… Invisible to Shodan and all scanners

๐Ÿšจ Real Horror Stories

In 2020, researchers found 15,000+ exposed Hikvision cameras with default passwords accessible on Shodan. In 2023, a family discovered their baby monitor was being watched by strangers โ€” the camera was port-forwarded with the factory password. In 2021, a Ring camera hack allowed attackers to speak to a child through the speaker. Port forwarding your cameras is like leaving your front door open and hoping nobody walks in.

๐Ÿค” WHAT IS TAILSCALE?

Tailscale โ€” Your Private Internet

๐Ÿ”’ Tailscale = A Private Network That Works Everywhere

Tailscale is a mesh VPN built on WireGuard (the fastest, most secure VPN protocol, built into the Linux kernel). It creates a private, encrypted network between all your devices โ€” your phone, laptop, home server, and Raspberry Pi โ€” no matter where they are in the world.

Unlike traditional VPNs (which route all traffic through one server), Tailscale creates direct, peer-to-peer connections between your devices. Your phone in a coffee shop connects directly to your home Raspberry Pi โ€” encrypted, fast, and with zero configuration on your router.

๐Ÿ’ก Open Source Status

Tailscale's client is open source (github.com/tailscale/tailscale, BSD license). The coordination server is proprietary but there's a fully open-source alternative called Headscale โ€” a self-hosted Tailscale control server. For maximum independence: Tailscale client + Headscale server = 100% open source, 100% self-hosted, zero dependency on any company.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ THE ARCHITECTURE

How This Setup Works

๐Ÿ“ The Complete Setup โ€” What Goes Where

Here's the architecture for securely accessing home cameras from anywhere:

๐Ÿ“น
Camera(s)
On your home LAN
IP: 192.168.1.x
RTSP stream or web UI
๐Ÿ“
Raspberry Pi / Linux PC
Runs Tailscale + Frigate/NVR
On same LAN as cameras
Acts as your "bridge"
๐Ÿ”’
Tailscale Network
WireGuard encrypted tunnel
Private mesh VPN
Connects all YOUR devices
๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ’ป
Your Devices
Phone, laptop, tablet
Running Tailscale app
Access from ANYWHERE

Key insight: The cameras NEVER touch the internet. They sit on your local network. The Raspberry Pi (with Tailscale) is the ONLY device that bridges your private Tailscale network to your local camera network. Your router's firewall stays completely closed.

โšก STEP-BY-STEP SETUP

Complete Setup Guide

From zero to secure camera access in about 30 minutes.

1

๐Ÿ“ Create a Tailscale Account

โฑ๏ธ 2 minutes
1
Go to tailscale.com and sign up (free account โ€” up to 100 devices)
2
Sign in with Google, Microsoft, GitHub, or email
3
Your Tailnet (private network) is automatically created โ€” it has a name like your-name.ts.net
๐Ÿ’ก Free Tier

Tailscale's free plan includes 100 devices and 3 users โ€” more than enough for a home setup. No credit card needed.

2

๐Ÿ“ Install Tailscale on Your Home Server / Raspberry Pi

โฑ๏ธ 5 minutes

This is the machine on your home network that can see the cameras. It becomes the "bridge" between Tailscale and your cameras.

Install Tailscale on Raspberry Pi / Linux
# One-line installer (works on Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, Debian, Mint) $ curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh # Start Tailscale and authenticate $ sudo tailscale up # A URL will appear โ€” open it in your browser to authenticate # After auth, your Pi gets a Tailscale IP (e.g., 100.x.y.z) # Verify it's connected: $ tailscale status # You should see your Pi listed with a 100.x.y.z IP
๐Ÿ”‘ Enable Subnet Router (THE KEY STEP)

This is what lets your remote devices access the cameras' LOCAL IPs through Tailscale:

Enable subnet routing โ€” access your entire home LAN
# Enable IP forwarding (required for subnet routing) $ echo 'net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.d/99-tailscale.conf $ echo 'net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding = 1' | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.d/99-tailscale.conf $ sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/99-tailscale.conf # Advertise your home network subnet # Replace 192.168.1.0/24 with YOUR home network range $ sudo tailscale up --advertise-routes=192.168.1.0/24 # Now go to Tailscale admin console โ†’ Machines โ†’ your Pi # โ†’ Edit route settings โ†’ APPROVE the subnet route

After approving the subnet route in the Tailscale admin panel, any device on your Tailscale network can now access any IP on your home LAN (192.168.1.x) โ€” including your cameras โ€” as if they were physically at home!

3

๐Ÿ“ฑ Install Tailscale on Your Phone & Laptop

โฑ๏ธ 3 minutes per device
๐Ÿ“ฑ
Android
Google Play Store โ†’ "Tailscale"
๐ŸŽ
iOS
App Store โ†’ "Tailscale"
๐Ÿ’ป
Windows / macOS
tailscale.com/download
๐Ÿง
Linux
Same install script as above

Install the app, sign in with the same account, and enable "Use Tailscale subnets" (or "Accept routes" on desktop). Now your phone/laptop is connected to your private Tailscale network.

4

๐Ÿ“น Access Your Cameras from ANYWHERE!

โฑ๏ธ Done!

Now, from any device with Tailscale running โ€” even from a hotel in another country โ€” you can access your cameras using their LOCAL home IPs:

Access cameras remotely (same as being at home!)
# On your phone browser (with Tailscale VPN active): http://192.168.1.50 # Camera 1 web interface http://192.168.1.51 # Camera 2 web interface # If running Frigate NVR on the Pi: http://192.168.1.100:5000 # Frigate dashboard (all cameras) # Or using Tailscale MagicDNS (if enabled): http://pi-camera:5000 # Access by name, not IP! # RTSP streams (for VLC or camera apps): rtsp://192.168.1.50:554/stream1 # Direct RTSP stream # ๐ŸŽ‰ You're watching your home cameras from anywhere in the world # through an encrypted tunnel โ€” ZERO ports open on your router!
๐ŸŽ‰ That's It!

You're now accessing your cameras securely from anywhere. The traffic is encrypted with WireGuard. No ports are open on your router. No cloud service sees your video. Nobody except devices on YOUR Tailscale network can connect. You've achieved something that corporations pay thousands for โ€” for $0.

๐Ÿš€ ADVANCED

Best Setup: Frigate NVR + Tailscale

AI-powered camera recording + secure remote access = the ultimate combo.

๐Ÿง  Why Frigate + Tailscale is the Dream Setup

Frigate (frigate.video) is an open-source NVR (Network Video Recorder) with AI object detection. It runs on a Raspberry Pi or any Linux PC and:

โ€ข Records video from all your cameras 24/7
โ€ข Uses AI to detect people, cars, animals (locally โ€” no cloud!)
โ€ข Sends alerts only when it detects something interesting (not every tree branch)
โ€ข Stores recordings on a local hard drive
โ€ข Beautiful web dashboard to view all cameras

Combined with Tailscale, you get: AI-powered cameras + secure remote access + zero cloud dependency + zero subscription fees. No Ring subscription. No Google Nest fees. No corporate access to your video.

Docker Compose: Frigate + Tailscale on Raspberry Pi
# docker-compose.yml version: "3.9" services: frigate: image: ghcr.io/blakeblackshear/frigate:stable container_name: frigate restart: unless-stopped privileged: true volumes: - ./config:/config - ./storage:/media/frigate - /etc/localtime:/etc/localtime:ro ports: - "5000:5000" # Web UI - "8554:8554" # RTSP restream environment: - FRIGATE_RTSP_PASSWORD=YourCameraPassword # Tailscale is installed on the HOST (not in Docker) # So Frigate at 192.168.1.100:5000 is accessible via Tailscale # from anywhere in the world! # Start everything: $ docker compose up -d # Access: http://192.168.1.100:5000 (locally) # Or: http://pi-camera:5000 (via Tailscale from anywhere!)
๐Ÿ”“ 100% SELF-HOSTED

Headscale โ€” The Fully Open Source Option

๐Ÿ”“ Headscale = Self-Hosted Tailscale Control Server

Tailscale's client is open source, but their coordination server is proprietary. If you want zero dependency on Tailscale's company, use Headscale โ€” a fully open-source, self-hosted implementation of Tailscale's control server.

Tailscale client + Headscale server = 100% open source mesh VPN. No company involved. No data sent to anyone. Complete sovereignty.

Install Headscale (self-hosted control server)
# Download and install Headscale $ wget https://github.com/juanfont/headscale/releases/latest/download/headscale_linux_amd64 $ sudo mv headscale_linux_amd64 /usr/local/bin/headscale $ sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/headscale # Create config and run $ sudo headscale serve # Connect Tailscale clients to YOUR server instead of Tailscale's: $ tailscale up --login-server https://your-headscale-server.com # Now you have a fully self-hosted mesh VPN!
๐Ÿ’ก When to Use Headscale

Use Tailscale's free tier if you just want it to work with zero effort. Use Headscale if you want 100% independence from any company, if you're running this for an organization, or if you're philosophically committed to full open source. Both use the same WireGuard encryption โ€” equally secure.

๐Ÿ”’ HARDENING

Extra Security Tips for Camera Systems

๐Ÿ”‘ 1. ALWAYS Change Default Camera Passwords

Factory passwords (admin/admin, admin/12345) are the #1 reason cameras get hacked. Even behind Tailscale, change EVERY camera's default password to something strong (12+ characters). This is defense in depth โ€” multiple layers of security.

๐Ÿ”„ 2. Update Camera Firmware

Camera manufacturers release firmware updates that fix security vulnerabilities. Check for updates every 3โ€“6 months. Hikvision, Reolink, Dahua, and others have had critical vulnerabilities patched in updates. An unpatched camera is a liability.

๐ŸŒ 3. Create a Separate Camera VLAN (Advanced)

For maximum isolation: put cameras on a separate network (VLAN) that has NO internet access. Cameras only need to talk to your NVR (Frigate), not to the internet. This way, even if a camera is compromised, it can't reach the internet or your other devices.

๐Ÿ” 4. Use Tailscale ACLs (Access Control Lists)

In the Tailscale admin panel, set up ACLs to control which devices can access which services. Example: your phone can access cameras, but your work laptop cannot. Your spouse can view cameras but not SSH into the server.

๐Ÿšซ 5. Block Camera Cloud Features

Many cameras try to "phone home" โ€” sending data to manufacturer servers (China, US, wherever). If you're using Frigate as your NVR, you don't need the camera's cloud features. Block all outbound internet access for cameras in your router/firewall. Cameras should talk to your Pi only.

๐Ÿ’พ 6. Encrypt Camera Storage

If recordings are stored on an external drive, encrypt it (LUKS on Linux). If someone steals the Pi or the hard drive, they can't access your recordings without the encryption password.
